#Review:Pen Pals by Joan Holub

My review:
This sweet little first reader book tells the tale of Daisy and her class who get to have pen pals from another school. Daisy is excited until she learns that her pen pal is not a girl.

I wanted to review this book from the first time I saw it in Ms. Holub's written children's works. It reminded me of my grade school years of having numerous pen pals and what the act of writing brought for me.

This is the case for Daisy as she learns that writing helps to express thoughts, although sometimes, ones thoughts are not always correct. She also learns not to be judgmental and to learn about other people who may not be just like you.

I enjoyed the detailed pictures in the book too that gave life to the characters the author was writing about. The excitement and disappointment on Daisy's face was priceless and fit well with the words. I liked that her "letters" as well as the pen pal's letters were on the pages. To me this allowed the reader to feel what the character was thinking and in some ways, step into the character role.

Since this is recommended for grades 1-3, the sentences are a little longer and a bit more complex. The writing is smaller but still large enough for children who still may be in the emergent reader stage.

This is an awesome book as I have expected from Ms. Holub and deserves the 5 stars she is getting!
